An experiment gone wrong, an idea by a mad scientist. To recreate a Cetra. An ancient human with powers far beyond the comprehension of mortal man. It's always bad when a mad scientist performs an experiment that goes horribly wrong. But what happens when he actually succeeds? Far beyond all expectations.
Sephiroth never really knew the real name of his mother growing up. Shinra simply told him, her name was Jenova. And as the raised him to become a powerful fighter, the strongest member ever to be a part of Shinra's SOLDIER, he never questioned it. After all, it couldn't lead to anything significant could it?
As a result of his skills, he was personally chosen by the President of Shinra to perform only the most dangerous and critical missions, resulting in stories spreading far and wide, influencing his future arch-nemesis, Cloud Strife, into joining SOLDIER.
In SOLDIER, Sephiroth's closest friends were also a result of similar experiments: Angeal Hewley and Genesis Rhapsodos. While rivals, they also considered themselves closest of friends, each of them being close to equal in terms of ability. However, it was one of his closest friends, Gensis, that lead to his descent into madness.
Having discovered on his own, the real secret behind their creation, Genesis explained what Jenova really was, and the project behind it. Sephiroth, the greatest SOLDIER Shinra had ever produced was the final result. Having discovered the pods in Nibelheim, that contained mutated creatures, that had been infused with both Mako and Jenova cells, Sephiroth was deeply disturbed by what he had found.
Realizing he needed to know the truth, he left for the mansion home of Shinra's researchers. Discovering the notes written during his creation, he was driven mad. Believing himself to now be the son of the last Cetra, Jenova, he decided to take revenge for humanity's supposed treachery against his ancestors, despite in reality Jenova actually being the cause.
As a result he burned Nebelheim to the ground, and returned to the reactor to reclaim his mother's remains. He easily dispatched Tifa Lockhart, Zack Fair, and any others who stood in his way. All until that damned boy Cloud, interfered with his plans. Getting the jump on him, Cloud manage to stab Sephiroth through with the Buster Sword.
But that wasn't enough to kill Sephiroth, for in his mind, he had grown beyond death, removing Jenova's head, he stabbed Cloud through with his sword, only for Cloud to somehow gather the strength to through him into the reactor. But this wasn't the end for Sephiroth. In fact it was just the beginning.
Now traveling through the Lifestream, Sephiroth managed to learn all he everything he could about the ancient Cetra, all the while keeping his persona separate from the Lifestream. All the while his father, the insane Professor Hojo's continued experiments gave him a chance to return and manipulate others, including the one known as Cloud. Encasing his body in Mako Crystal to strengthen his abilities, the call for Reunion soon went out, and all of Hojo's new Sephiroth clones, headed to the Northern Crater to rejoin with their original.
Using his newfound powers, he manipulated Cloud into getting him the Black Materia, allowing him to summon forth Meteor, with which he could destroy the world. He then uses the remains of Jenova, which are now stored in Shinra's Headquarters, to create a copy of himself. Causing Cloud and the members of Avalanche to chase him all over the world.
His manipulations, not only allowed him to gain the Black Materia, but also slays Aeris, the last true Cetra. Allowing him not only to summon Meteor but to halt the summoning of Holy, the only known way to stop Meteor.
Finally arriving at his hiding place in the Northern Crater, Cloud and Company manage defeat the Jenova copy of Sephiroth, but Sephiroth's continued mental manipulations of Cloud's mind cause him to turn over the Black Materia. Sephiroth causes the crater to collapse and release several monsters known collectively as WEAPON to distract everyone long enough for Meteor to impact on the planet. Then when the Lifestream emerged, it would engulf him, turning him into a God.
The gambit almost succeeded, however, Aeris had not only succeeded in summoning Holy, but her death had lead to her gaining control of the Lifestream, leading her to use it to stop the meteor, while Cloud managed to defeat Sephiroth's new godlike forms.
Sephiroth vanished again for a time, allowing everyone to believe he was dead. However, a new fatal disease called Geostigma, was ravaging the world's populations. Through the use of "remnants", or partial clones created by Sephiroth's will and with his energy, he made his second bid, to become a God. Using the tainted bodies of those infected, to corrupt the Lifestream, giving him control. However, he was again defeated by Cloud, but not before uttering the cryptic words, "I will.....never...be a memory."
